Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman make up the three Cayman Islands, and are actually rocky outcroppings at the top of a sub-marine mountain range known as the Cayman Ridge. Just 102 square miles (264 square km) in total, the islands are located 150 miles south of Cuba, 460 miles south of Miami, 167 miles northwest of Jamaica.
A multi-cultural, sophisticated business and leisure paradise, the Cayman Islands lie in the heart of the Western Caribbean, just a short flight from the United States. Excellent air links mean ease of travel to and from a number of U.S. and Caribbean destinations, as well as a direct British Airways flight to London Heathrow four times a week. There are also daily flights to and from the Sister Islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman via Cayman Airways.
Although discovered in 1503 by Christopher Columbus, the islands were not inhabited until the 17th Century. Columbus named the islands Las Tortugas, after the plentiful supply of turtles that he found upon arrival. The islands eventually took the name Caymanas after the marine crocodiles which used to roam here. Formerly a dependency of Jamaica, the Cayman Islands decided to remain under British rule when Jamaica claimed its independence from Britain in 1962. Up until the 1960s and 1970s, the economy was sustained by the seamanship of its men who often worked abroad for long periods of time. In the 1960s the beginnings of its financial services industry were starting to take shape, and today this industry has elevated Cayman into a world class, top financial centre.
As a British Overseas Territory, the Cayman Islands enjoys stable governance, while its tax neutral status and highly developed infrastructure attract the best and brightest professionals from all around the world, all calling the Cayman Islands home. In fact, there are over 100 nationalities seamlessly living and working alongside each other, a shining example of a truly well integrated multi-cultural society.
To meet the real estate demands of its residents, the Cayman Islands has developed an incredibly diverse and attractive range of homes and properties that elevate Caribbean real estate and living to new heights.
